Nobody Warns You Which Friendships End at Sixty-Five

Black and white woodcut-style image of two older men seated at a small table beneath a swirling vortex of papers, a ship, and an empty chair.

There is a kind of friendship that only exists because two people once stood in the same room and disliked the same thing.

It is not necessarily a shallow friendship. That is what makes it awkward. These can be loyal, funny, long-running, useful friendships. The sort where one half-sentence is enough because the other person already knows the meeting, the process, the tone of voice, and the exact expression on the face of the person who made the day worse.

At work, that can feel like being understood.

Sometimes it is.

But retirement does not only remove the job. It removes the shared weather. The little irritations that gave shape to a conversation no longer arrive in your inbox. The people who once filled your head become names from another building. The process still exists somewhere, no doubt, but it no longer has its hand on your collar.

Then an old friend rings and tells you about it.

You recognise everything. You know where the story is going. You know which part will be maddening, which part will be denied, and which part everyone will pretend is complicated because nobody wants to say it is simple.

But you are not inside it anymore.

That is the strange discovery. You can still understand the complaint without belonging to it. You can still make the right noises, but the old heat is gone. The friendship has to stand there without the machinery that used to hold it up.

Some do.

Some do not.

Nobody warns you that the first friendships to go may not be the ones built on argument. They may be the ones built on agreement. The ones where you both nodded at the same absurdity for years and mistook the nodding for the whole of the thing.

That does not make the old friendship false. It means it had a season, and the season ended more quietly than anyone expected.
