Can You Really Look Intelligent While Listening to Complete Nonsense?

You know that look people give when they’re nodding as if they’ve just discovered the meaning of life—when in fact they’re listening to Barry explain why blockchain will revolutionise toilet paper distribution? That look can be learned. The problem isn’t that Barry believes it. The problem is you’re trapped opposite him, wondering if there’s a polite way to escape through the fire exit without setting off the alarm. Most of us assume the choices are twofold: correct the nonsense and start an argument, or sit in silent despair until it ends. But in reality, there’s a third option: make the nonsense useful. Here’s how. First, the pause. Don’t interrupt. Don’t roll your eyes. Instead, wear the face of an amateur entomologist spotting a rare beetle on the kitchen floor.
