The polite phrases that move older workers quietly out of the room

Every generation gets its own office language, and ours has apparently decided that plain speech is too dangerous to be left unsupervised. Nobody is fired anymore. They are transitioned. Nobody loses authority. They are moved into advisory work. Nobody is told they are no longer wanted in the room. The room simply develops a sudden appetite for "fresh energy", as though experience were a battery that had been left in a drawer too long. That is the little workplace trick I wrote about today on Substack. It began with a video call, a restructuring, and an older engineer being gently moved aside by language that sounded kind only because nobody involved wanted to say the actual sentence out loud: We don't need you here anymore. The article is not really about one meeting. It is about the way older workers are increasingly vanished by phrases that pretend to respect them while quietly removing power, budget, authority, and purpose. We have all heard the phrases by now. "Strategic oversight." "Knowledge transfer." "Succession planning." "Creating space for new voices." In the right setting, these can be perfectly sensible ideas. In the wrong one, they are a velvet rope across a door. What irritates me is not change. Change is necessary. Ships are sold. Departments shrink. People retire. Jobs end. I spent enough of my working life around machinery, weather, schedules, and money to know that pretending hard facts are soft ones rarely improves anything. What irritates me is the refusal to speak plainly to people who have earned plain speech. An older worker can survive bad news. Most of us have had worse news than a reorganised department. What is harder to survive is being patronised out of usefulness one euphemism at a time. Watch the language. When the words get smoother, ask what has just been removed. If the title gets grander and the job gets smaller, you are not being honoured. You are being parked. Stood at the harbour wall this morning and did something I've done perhaps ten thousand times. Looked at the water. Read the conditions. Force 3 from the northeast, slight confused swell from two directions — a remnant from yesterday's weather running into today's — pressure dropping, cloud building in the upper quadrant in the particular way that means rain before evening. Took about four seconds. Completely automatic. Completely accurate. Completely pointless. There's no ship. There hasn't been for nearly a year. No crew to brief, no harbour master to call, no passage plan to adjust.
